Our First History

 

 Good Shepherd Balika Maha Vidyalaya which is located in Wattala Nayakakandha town, was began under the supervision of Parish Priest and Rev.Sr.Mary Bridget with two other nuns. based on their lofry vision and expections of teaching the female students the school was began at that time. Under the motto "Truth and Justice", proud records have been established in the field of education in last 89 years by producing great women for the motherland. This school was started in 1928 under the guidance of the nuns of Good Shepherd sect, and it was called as Francis English School. In the beginning, four sips were given to 12 female students from a five-person committee. By 1935, there was a school providing education in English, Sinhala and Tamil with a teaching staff of 15, most of whom were nuns. The school which was run by Irish nuns from the beginning, received considerable support from the local residents in its development.

Like other schools in the island, this school also had to face the government takeover of education in 1960 and it was renamed as Good Shepherd Girls' High School, and classes were held from 1-13 grades. In order to avoid administrative difficulties, the school had to be separated into primary and secondary sections. After it was renamed as Nayakakanda Primary School with Grade 1-5 primary sections. In the Good Shepherd Girls High School, classes are conducted from 6-13 grades with the three streams of Arts / Science / Commerce up to advanced level.

At present the path of the Good Shepherd Girls' School has started to shine, surpassing the existing conditions in all the subject areas. School girls have been fortunate enough to focus on team sports and track and field sports, as well as sports like karate, chess, and swimming. The school will work to support a healthy lifestyle by implementing the required physical fitness training for all sports as well as the physical fitness program at the class level as well as nutritional programs according to the body mass index (BMI) of the students. Dental clinics, eye clinics, sanitation services, and maintenance services are maintained with the aim of improving the health and nutritional status of school girls. By continuing the projects such as Health promotion programmes, dengue awareness programmes, and shramadhana campaigns the school has been able to develop the ability to create a safe and attractive learning environment. 

A contribution is made by St. John's Ambulance Corps, Student Leader System, Student Parliament, Environmental Corps, and Regulatory Committee are also active in the school with the aim of producing female students with high character.  The attractive aesthetic classroom with all aesthetic aspects and the use of television in the learning process have led to the success of the aesthetic department. Bilingual (English/ Sinhala) teaching is implemented in the school. With the aim of developing self-awareness, impulsivity control, attention, memory, and self-discipline in the school students, the weekly school workload and the monthly Divine masses help to develop spiritual virtue. In order to improve the quality of education math camps, garbage management closures, English camps, and the Monday morning assembly in the school have led to the excitement of the students.

Like educating high school graduates about new trends in the ever-changing labor market, and higher education opportunities, and providing opportunities for field placements,  the school has been able to provide a helping hand in shaping the future prospects of the students. Also, Eastern and Western bands, a computer lab, 3 Smart Class Rooms, an audio-visual unit, a fully equipped home laboratory, and a laboratory owned by the school. Through the implementation of group projects by the high school students and their contributions to the school grounds, property modernization, and school development activities the school,  is developing day by day uniquely by their contributions. With the aim of improving the mental health of everyone in the school system, a super clean beautiful school environment and super clean classrooms with a learning environment are also maintained here.

2021 G.C.E.O/L overall result was 72%, and in the year of 2022 G.C.E.A/L aggregate result was 70%. Among them, the result of the arts section was 54% and the overall result of the commerce and science section was 89% and 18% respectively. 2022 G.E.C.O/L results 66% and G.C.E.O/L 2023 average target is 80% while G.E.C.A/L target result is 75%. The main development objective of the school is to increase the continuous progress of text results to 85% and bring extracurricular activities, and sports skills to the national level by 2028.

 The weak areas that exist day by day are identified and taken to sustainable development through the administration of the good shepherd nuns. Their dedication, indomitable courage, and determination will be remembered forever with gratitude.  At present, the school system is operating with the objective of creating good shepherdians who will overcome the challenges faced by female students in various periods and pursue their educational goals. The provided Sinhala text discusses plans to elevate the academic and extracurricular standards of a school by implementing a new educational paradigm by the year 2029. This includes the establishment of a new academic curriculum, the development of sports, and cultural activities, and the fostering leadership skills among students. The focus is on creating a well-rounded educational environment that integrates knowledge, physical fitness, and character development.
